Question My home was destroyed in a natural disaster. Can the State help me?

Answer The New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) provides housing referral services to eligible homeowners and renters that have been displaced by a natural disaster. The following are services available to victims of disasters:

Through a network of non-profit housing providers that exist throughout New York State, DHCR can coordinate efforts to assist those in need of finding permanent or temporary housing. These non-profit housing companies, referred to as Neighborhood and Rural Preservation Companies, are experts in the housing field and respond to the needs of disaster victims.

Our HUD Section 8 Program serves very-low income families who need permanent housing or who have been indefinitely displaced by State or Federally declared disasters.

In conjunction with local governments, DHCR will try to find available housing to meet the needs of any individual or family. Housing vacancies are identified in state-aided/state-assisted housing to help relocate families to temporary housing.

DHCR provides staff support at Disaster Service Centers where a person can meet face-to-face with Federal, State, local and voluntary agency representatives. Victims can discuss disaster related needs; obtain information about assistance programs; and obtain materials which can assist in recovery efforts.

DHCR provides services to weatherize the homes of low-income eligible renters and owners. The services are delivered through community-based not-for-profit agencies located in all counties of the State. Services to victims may include range of activities such as comprehensive damage assessment, temporary relocation, pumping of cellars and assistance in completing applications for aid. Eligible homeowners may also receive emergency assistance to replace or restore their primary heating system to a working condition.
