What kind of recreation is available on State Land?

 Different types of State lands have different rules and regulations. In general, most types of passive recreation is allowed on most lands (i.e. hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, hunting, fishing, trapping, and nature observation). Primitive camping is allowed on State owned lands in the Adirondack and Catskill State Parks and in State Forests; however, you must be greater than 150 feet from water, trails, and roads. Parties of ten people or more, or if you intend to camp for three days or more in the same area, a camping permit is needed from your local Forest Ranger. Camping is generally not allowed on Wildlife Management Areas. On State lands, snowmobiling is only allowed on marked snowmobile trails. Horseback riding is allowed anywhere on State lands except on marked hiking/foot trails and on marked ski trails covered with snow.
