Is it legal to camp on State Forest lands and where do I get a camping permit?
Yes. Unless specifically prohibited, groups of less than 10 people may camp for up to 3 nights without a permit. For longer stays, or for groups of 10 or more people, a camping permit is required. Permits can be obtained by contacting the regional forest rangers' office. Links to the offices are listed in the left column at www.dec.ny.gov/about/558.html There is no fee.
