What services are offered for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities in New York State, and how can I find them?

 The state of New York and its local governments have a responsibility for the comprehensively planned provision of services including care, treatment, habilitation and rehabilitation of citizens with mental retardation and developmental disabilities and for the prevention and early detection of mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

The Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities develops an integrated and comprehensive system of services to promote independence, inclusion, individuality and productivity for persons with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. In order to meet the needs of the people they serve, OMRDD expands the number and types of its community-based services and develops new methods of service delivery. It is the goal of the agency to provide these supports while improving their equity, effectiveness and efficiency by serving persons in the community as well as those in developmental centers, and by establishing accountability for carrying out the policies of the State with regard to such persons. OMRDD also develops programs to further the prevention and early detection of mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Services for New Yorkers with mental retardation and developmental disabilities are provided by the State of New York as well as by private-sector not-for-profit voluntary organizations.
