If I grieve my assessment and I'm not satisfied, are there options?
If you are dissatisfied with the Board of Assessment Review's decision, there is an opportunity to seek judicial review through Small Claims Assessment Review if you are a homeowner, or in State Supreme Court pursuant to Article 7 of the Real Property Tax Law. Small Claims Assessment Review (SCAR) provides an inexpensive way for most homeowners to seek further review of their assessments if they are dissatisfied with the decisions of their local BAR. For eligible property owners, this process eliminates the need for more costly and formal proceedings in State Supreme Court. To apply for SCAR, use Form RPTL 730 (pdf format) available from your county clerkâs office.
