How do I find out about affordable housing in my area?
There are many ways to find out about affordable housing in your area. For example, you may check with your municipality, municipal housing authority, or with not-for-profit or charitable organizations. They may be able to guide you in the right direction. The New York State Affordable Housing Corporation (AHC) may also be able to help. Although individuals and families can't apply directly for AHC grants, AHC can provide you with a list of its grantees that may be administering grants to individuals and families in your area.
You can also check out the New York State Housing Finance Agency's (HFA) website for information on affordable rental apartments. HFA is a public benefit corporation created to finance low-income housing. In buildings financed by HFA, all or a portion of the apartments have been set aside for rental to tenants with lower incomes. HFA does not own or manage the buildings it finances. The owners and/or management companies they may hire are responsible for selecting eligible tenants. Go to http://www.nyhomes.org/home/index.asp?page=289
