Who determines if an inmate is obtaining appropriate medical or mental health care while incarcerated in New York State?
The New York State Commission of Correction's Forensic Medical Unit evaluates the quality of medical and mental health care provided in correctional facilities. This information is then reviewed by the Medical Review Board, which was established within the Commission by the Governor and the Legislature and consists of six members, which make recommendations for improving the delivery of health care to detainees and sentenced offenders in New York State.
