Question How do I check on the reliability and/or license of a Home Improvement Contractor?

Answer While there currently is no State licensing requirement for Home Improvement Contractors, most local consumer affairs offices do license these contractors.The New York State Consumer Protection Board has a brochure available entitled “Home Improvements Without Headaches” that includes a model contract for use by homeowners and contractors. You may also wish to find out whether your county government has a licensing requirement for contractors and, if so, which agency it is.
