I purchased an item with cash and would like to return it for a cash refund but the store refuses—stating its policy is to offer store credit only. Is this legal?
Under the New York State General Business Law, Section 218, a retailer must clearly post its returns and exchange policy, stating whether refunds are provided and under what conditions a refund will be given. Individual store policies may vary.
Any retailer that violates Section 218 of the New York State General Business Law must offer a consumer the option of receiving cash or credit for up to 20 days on merchandise not used or damaged by the consumer.
