What types of employment are minors permitted to perform?
Sections 131 and 132 of the Labor Law prescribe that, for most occupations, minors are required to possess an employment certificate or permit. Section 133 expressly prohibits minors from being employed in, or assisting in, certain specified occupations - those which are recognized as posing a substantial risk of injury to the youthful employee. Thus, minors under the age of 18 are prohibited from working in certain hazardous occupations such as those in construction work, or in the operation of certain power-driven machinery, or in the operation of circular saws, or as a helper on a motor vehicle. Minors under 16 years of age are prohibited from working in the workroom of a factory.
